A shooting incident occurs. The government puts out a story. Agendas form and take the place of the story. Unresolved issues disappear in heated dispute over agendas. Gun control advocates blame guns, and Second Amendment defenders blame other factors. When the media permit agenda to take precedence over news, people lose confidence in the media and distrust spreads deeper into society. 

If the media and the government are opposed to conspiracy theories, they should not foster the theories by mishandling the news. Neither the right-wing nor the left-wing has an interest in getting to the bottom of things. The right-wing is aligned with the police state in order to make us safe from “terrorism”– Muslim terrorism, not the terrorism of the unaccountable police state. The American left is so feeble that it essentially doesn’t exist. Its issues are gun control, homosexual marriage, abortion, and taxing “the rich.” Such misfocus cannot slow the onrushing militarized police state. American liberals have such an abiding faith in government that they are incapable of believing that beloved government would be culpable in crimes–unless, of course, it was Ronald Reagan’s government. As tyranny envelops the land, the main goal of the “left-wing” is to disarm the population. 

The American “left” is the enabler of the police state, and the American “right” is its progenitor. Americans began their descent into deception and tyranny in the final years of the 20th century with the Clinton regime’s aggression against Serbia and murderous sanctions on Iraq. These war crimes were portrayed by the US media and foreign policy community as great achievements of Western democracy and humanitarianism. In the first decade of the 21st century Americans lost their constitutional protections and had their pocketbooks opened to indefinite wars. The latest report is that Washington is sending US troops into 35 African countries.

WATCH Chinese television these days and you might conclude that the outbreak of war with Japan over what it calls the Senkaku and China the Diaoyu islands is only a matter of time. You might well be right. Since Japan in September announced it would “nationalise” three of the islands that had been privately owned, China, which has long contested Japan’s sovereignty over them, has also started challenging its resolve to keep control of them. So both countries are claiming to own the islands and both are pretending to administer them. China this week announced its intention to map them thoroughly. 

  

Something has to give. In response to the deteriorating climate, Kurt Campbell, assistant secretary of state in President Barack Obama’s administration, flew to the region this week, urging “cooler heads to prevail”. Hotter heads are more in fashion. Hopes that recent changes in leadership in China and Japan might bring an easing of tensions have been disappointed. Hitoshi Tanaka of the Institute for International Strategy in Tokyo notes that the emergence last September of Shinzo Abe, a right-wing nationalist, as head of Japan’s Liberal Democratic Party was influenced by the feeling that Japan needed to take a tougher line with China. In December Mr Abe became prime minister for a second time, after an election campaign in which he promised just that. Since then China, too, has become more assertive over the islands. Already, in his speech to the Communist Party’s five-yearly congress in November, Hu Jintao, its outgoing leader, had declared China’s ambition to “build itself into a maritime power”, the first time this had been stated so explicitly. Nor is it clear that his successor, the less wooden Xi Jinping, who will be named president in March, shares his predecessors’ habitual caution in dealings with America. He will surely see no benefit in compromising with Japan, which is despised by many Chinese. And, with little or no military experience, he will want to appear a strong commander-in-chief.

It is against this backdrop that televised military punditry is booming in China. On current-affairs programmes, armchair warriors pontificate about the Diaoyus. Newspapers propagate a uniformly jingoistic analysis of the increasing likelihood of armed conflict. They are not making it up. Last month a small aircraft of China’s State Oceanic Bureau flew into what Japan considers its territorial airspace over the Senkakus. Flying too low to be detected by Japan’s land-based radar, it was spotted too late for a scramble of eight F-15 fighter jets to prove effective. Since then, Japan has deployed Airborne Warning and Control Systems (AWACS). On January 7th Chinese patrol ships spent more than 13 hours near the islands—longer than ever before, said Japanese officials. On January 10th, when two Japanese F-15s scrambled to intercept a Chinese plane flying near the islands, China scrambled its own fighter jets. Now the Japanese air force is weighing whether to fire warning shots if Chinese aircraft come into its airspace, for the first time since 1987, when the former Soviet Union intruded. For General Peng Guanqian of the Chinese Academy of Military Sciences, interviewed on a Chinese web portal, this would amount to the first shot of “actual combat”. China should then “respond without courtesy”, he said. The Japanese press reported that America had also warned Japan against firing shots.

Long term unemployment under President Obama is at the highest level since at least the end of World War II, threatening to create a permanent underclass of workers who will find it difficult or impossible to obtain jobs in the future. What’s more, Obama’s insistence on repeatedly extending long term unemployment benefits may be fueling the unemployment problem. According to data recently released by the St. Louis Federal Reserve, the average duration of unemployment is now at about 40 weeks, double the previous highest level of about 20 weeks that prevailed during the last three recessions. A separate paper released by the Boston Federal Reserve paints a pernicious picture of the problem: 

Employers seem to be throwing out the resumes of the long-term unemployed and only hiring those who have been without a job for less than six months. Meanwhile, with the guarantee of benefits rolling in, the long term jobless might not be looking aggressively enough for work, the paper states. This suggests those who just had their unemployment benefits renewed for another year under this month’s fiscal cliff deal may need the benefits renewed again next year. And since the failure to get jobs is related solely to the length of unemployment – age, education and worker type do not seem to be a factor – Obama’s ambitious plans for funding worker training programs may have little effect. Since 2008, Congress has voted to extend unemployment benefits ten times at a cost of more than $500 billion. The latest extension raised federal spending by $30 billion.

Germany is set to retrieve its gold reserves held abroad, in a move critics fear could trigger a contagion of mistrust among the world’s central banks.

The country’s Bundesbank is set to repatriate a large hoard from its holding in New York and all of its bullion from Paris, the German newspaper Handelsblatt has reported. Germany's Bundesbank owns nearly 3,400 tonnes of gold – only the US has a bigger reserve. But now the bank is reportedly planning to overhaul this distribution, leaving just small amounts in the US and UK for trading and liquidity in dollars and sterling and bringing the rest back to Germany, worth an estimated $200 billion.  Bundesbank board member Carl-Ludwig Thiele claimed last year that there is no longer a need to hold gold abroad, now Germany is at peace. However critics fear Germany’s move could prompt other central banks to repatriate their gold, undermining the role of the US and UK as key custodians of the commodity.

The move comes just months after the German Federal Court of Auditors called on the Bundesbank to carry out a physical inspection of the gold reserves it stores at foreign banks. At the time it was thought the precious metal holdings had never been fully checked. The central bank was taken aback and maintained it did not see the need for more scrutiny in overseeing the reserves, saying 'there is no doubt about the integrity of the foreign storage sites'. However, the debate on the gold reserves continued to simmer, with some conspiracy theorists questioning their existence and a few politicians calling for some of the reserves to be retrieved. Germany has around eight times more gold than the UK, after Gordon Brown sold more than half of the UK's reserves between 1999 and 2002 when prices were at a 20-year low. Analysts say gold could still hit $2000/oz this year, meaning the UK could have sold its gold for £16billion, as opposed to £2billion.

Boston University Economics Professor Laurence Kotlikoff is worried about America’s dire financial situation. Dr. Kotlikoff says, “The situation is getting worse and worse and worse. We are running a massive six decade Ponzi scheme, and it’s coming to a real threatening point.” Dr.Kotlikoff calculates the real government deficit is enormous and it’s growing exponentially.

“It’s $222 trillion. Last year it was $211 trillion. We grew the deficit by $11 trillion in one year,” charges Dr. Kotlikoff. He also says, “We are actually in worse shape than any developed country. . . According to statistics assembled from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Center for Disease Control and the Federal Government, firearms related homicides are minuscule in comparison to other the other “big killers” in the United States. If we look at homicide statistics in the United States it’s clear that more murders are committed with knives, bats, hammers and poisons than with firearms. As Kurt Nimmo recently noted, “ the number of murders committed annually with hammers and clubs far outpaces the number of murders committed with a rifle.” 

The facts, not the drivel being spewed by the anti-gun propaganda machine, leave us wondering why some State and Federal lawmakers are so adamant aboutrestricting the sale and ownership of handguns and rifles, especially since the majority of gun owners – close to 99% – have never committed a violent crime in their lives, let alone used a gun to do so.

The law calls for “placing them on the list of specially designated nationals and blocked persons maintained by the Office of Foreign Assets Control of the Department of the Treasury.” Iosbaker said to Press TV, “Anyone who has even a cursory understanding of history knows that the U.S. government has always been doing one of two things. They have always been either repressing dissent or they have been actively preparing to repress it.”

True to form, the New York Times saw out 2012 by publishing another apology for dictatorship. In his op-ed, Louis Michael Seidman -- Professor of Constitutional Law at Georgetown University - argues that the Constitution should be abandoned. The suggestion is so preposterous that it is tempting to dismiss the article altogether, but to do so would be to miss some very revealing implications. The article is not so much a suggestion of constitutional reform as an open call for dictatorship. Seidman begins by blaming the current governmental crisis, incredibly, on "obedience to the Constitution," which he describes as containing "archaic, idiosyncratic and downright evil provisions." 

 He does, however, lament that when some wise government official reaches a decision on what will benefit the country, he is likely to be stymied by this document. Seidman expresses doubt about the rationality of letting our wise official be dissuaded by the views of "a group of white propertied men who have been dead for two centuries, knew nothing of our present situation, acted illegally under existing law and thought it was fine to own slaves.". It is amusing to note Seidman's hypocrisy as he takes the authority of this hypothetical 'government official' for granted while he sneers at the authority and smears the characters of men like Madison. Don't dwell on that double standard for too long, however, else you'll miss the real sleight of hand: the insinuation that belief in constitutional government amounts to faith in the personal authority of the founders -- that constitutional government has nothing to do with individual liberty. By launching into this ad hominem abuse of the Founding Fathers, Seidman hopes to distract his readers from noticing that without a constitution there would be no restraint on the government and that officials would be free to act on the expediency of the moment. 

But don't worry, says Seidman, you can have your Constitution and eat it too, "We should continue to follow those requirements" -- he is referring to principles like freedom of speech, freedom of religion, and the rule of law -- "out of respect, not obligation." Suppose we nullified laws prohibiting homicide: would we then expect people generally to continue to respect those abandoned laws? Why then should we expect government officials to continue to respect abandoned constitutional principles? Professor Seidman provides no answer. We can even keep, he says, constitutional features such as finite terms of office, a bicameral congress (these last two are "better left settled," apparently), checks and balances, and "an elite body like the Supreme Court."

Last night the House of Representatives voted 257-167 to pass the fiscal cliff bill. Many have pointed out that president Obama has come out the winner, while the Republicans who signed Grover Norquist's no-tax- increase pledge have been the biggest losers. But in a new op-ed for The Financial Times, Nouriel Roubini writes that the U.S. has been let down by its leaders and that they "dysfunctional nature" of the country's political system means another crisis isn't far off. He also says the country has yet to wake up to the "full extent of its fiscal nightmare". The next crisis according to Roubini could be just two months away, with spending cuts set to kick in at about the same time that the U.S. hits the debt ceiling. This is going to begin another "messy" debate between Democrats and Republicans. "The longer-term picture is bleaker still. 

The reality is that America is yet to wake up to the full extent of its fiscal nightmare. Even the typical Republican voter is not – being on average older and poorer than a Democrat voter – in favour of gutting the welfare state. Tea Party extremists are more noise than signal. That is why the plans of Mitt Romneyand Paul Ryan, the Republicans’ losing presidential ticket, postponed all the tough spending cuts on Social Security and Medicare by a decade. Neither Democrats nor Republicans recognize that maintaining a basic welfare state, which is right and necessary in our age of globalization, rapid technological change and demographic pressure, implies higher taxes for the middle class as well as for the rich. A deal that extends unsustainable tax cuts for 98 per cent of Americans is therefore a pyrrhic victory for Mr Obama. In short, the “mini deal” on the fiscal cliff dodged all the important questions. By not including spending cuts in the deal, the Democrats have emboldened Republicans who are determined to slash taxes but lack a plan to pay for it. It is again up to Washington’s policy makers to fix the problem before the market does it for them. Tuesday’s deal suggests this will not happen with any ease."

O Fundo Monetário Internacional considerou insuficiente o acordo aprovado nos Estados Unidos para evitar o abismo fiscal. O FMI pediu aos legisladores americanos para costurar um "plano completo" para sanar as finanças públicas do país.De acordo com o Fundo, os americanos fizeram pouco progresso com relação ao problema do déficit e também sobre o aumento o teto da dívida.

And indeed, the economic environment next year will not be easier, but more difficult. That should not discourage us, but - on the contrary - serve as an incentive. And on the eurozone crisis, she was adamant that more work must be done, despite the progress made this year: The European sovereign debt crisis shows us how important this balance is. The reforms we have agreed to are beginning to take effect. But we still need a lot of patience. The crisis is far from over. More needs to be done internationally, as well, to monitor the financial markets. The world has not sufficiently learned the lesson of the devastating financial crisis of 2008. For never again must such irresponsibility be allowed to take hold as it did then. In the social market economy, the state is the guardian of order, and the public must be able to place its trust in it.

Assault weapons have sold out in many Central Florida gun shops following President Barack Obama's promise to make gun control a "central issue" in the wake of the Newtown elementary school massacre. For the second time in four years, gun dealers reported daily sales matching as much a month's worth of business. "It started as soon as the president spoke on Tuesday," said Eileen Reig, who has sold guns and taught marksmanship for 45 years at Reig's Gun Shop and Range in Orlando. "Washington has started a panic…Everybody just needs to take a deep breath and calm down and see what happens."
