Black rifles, high-capacity magazines and anything else customers fear may be subject to future regulations have been vanishing from his shelves as fast as he can stock them. “It’s a ‘get it while you can,’” Fox said. “I have people who want to be put on lists for when they come in. People are just going absolutely bonkers because of the market, and profiteers are driving prices up on these items.” And while he anticipates tighter regulations in the near future on Bushmasters, AR-15s and other firearms classified as assault rifles — along with high-capacity magazines and other related accessories — he said fears of mass-confiscation are unfounded. But that doesn’t mean such fears aren’t driving sales.
“We know there’s going to be some changes,” Fox said. “But to physically go door-to-door and round up guns is logistically impossible. The amount of people you’d have to have to implement that policy is lunacy. There’s no way they’re ever going to come after your guns. ... I personally don’t believe our military would ever back an anti-Constitutional dictatorship move like that.” In the meantime, though, legislation could make some types of weapons, ammunition and accessories harder to get. California, Fox said, limits customers to two boxes of handgun ammunition per month. He said he suspects federal legislators may return to something similar to the 1994-2004 assault weapons ban, which restricted 30-round magazines, rifles with bayonet lugs and other features associated with military-style rifles. But, he said — and added that nearly all his customers agree — those who want to hurt people will find a way to do it, with or without access to guns. The same day as the Connecticut shootings, a man injured 22 children at a school in China with a knife. “Wackos are what wackos are. A gun is a tool,” Fox said.

Assault weapons have sold out in many Central Florida gun shops following President Barack Obama's promise to make gun control a "central issue" in the wake of the Newtown elementary school massacre. For the second time in four years, gun dealers reported daily sales matching as much a month's worth of business. "It started as soon as the president spoke on Tuesday," said Eileen Reig, who has sold guns and taught marksmanship for 45 years at Reig's Gun Shop and Range in Orlando. "Washington has started a panic…Everybody just needs to take a deep breath and calm down and see what happens."
