The Treasury official playing the bankers’ secret End Game was Larry Summers. Today, Summers is Barack Obama’s leading choice for Chairman of the US Federal Reserve, the world’s central bank. If the confidential memo is authentic, then Summers shouldn’t be serving on the Fed, he should be serving hard time in some dungeon reserved for the criminally insane of the finance world. The memo is authentic. I had to fly to Geneva to get confirmation and wangle a meeting with the Secretary General of the World Trade Organisation, Pascal Lamy. Lamy, the Generalissimo of Globalisation, told me, “The WTO was not created as some dark cabal of multinationals secretly cooking plots against the people... We don’t have cigar-smoking, rich, crazy bankers negotiating.” Then I showed him the memo. 

It begins with Larry Summers’ flunky, Timothy Geithner, reminding his boss to call the Bank bigshots to order their lobbyist armies to march: “As we enter the end-game of the WTO financial services negotiations, I believe it would be a good idea for you to touch base with the CEOs…” Let me explain: The year was 1997. US Treasury Secretary Robert Rubin was pushing hard to de-regulate banks. That required, first, repeal of the Glass-Steagall Act to dismantle the barrier between commercial banks and investment banks. It was like replacing bank vaults with roulette wheels. Second, the banks wanted the right to play a new high-risk game: “derivatives trading”. JP Morgan alone would soon carry $88 trillion of these pseudo-securities on its books as “assets”. Deputy Treasury Secretary Summers (soon to replace Rubin as Secretary) body-blocked any attempt to control derivatives. But what was the use of turning US banks into derivatives casinos if money would flee to nations with safer banking laws? The answer conceived by the Big Bank Five: eliminate controls on banks in every nation on the planet -- in one single move. It was as brilliant as it was insanely dangerous. How could they pull off this mad caper? The bankers' and Summers' game was to use the Financial Services Agreement (or FSA), an abstruse and benign addendum to the international trade agreements policed by the World Trade Organisation. 

Until the bankers began their play, the WTO agreements dealt simply with trade in goods – that is, my cars for your bananas. The new rules devised by Summers and the banks would force all nations to accept trade in "bads" – toxic assets like financial derivatives. Until the bankers’ re-draft of the FSA, each nation controlled and chartered the banks within their own borders. The new rules of the game would force every nation to open their markets to Citibank, JP Morgan and their derivatives “products”. And all 156 nations in the WTO would have to smash down their own Glass-Steagall divisions between commercial savings banks and the investment banks that gamble with derivatives. The job of turning the FSA into the bankers’ battering ram was given to Geithner, who was named Ambassador to the World Trade Organisation.

In recent weeks Saudi Arabia has launched an offensive against anti-regime activists arresting many and sentencing some to years in jail. Total number of political prisoners has now surpassed 40 thousand according to some reports. The crackdown has even forced a member of the ruling family to defect. RT Arabic spoke exclusively to Saudi prince Khaled Bin Farhan Al-Saud - who accuses the monarchy of corruption and silencing all voices of dissent.

“Saudi Arabia has stepped up arrests and trials of peaceful dissidents, and responded with force to demonstrations by citizens,” Human Rights Watch begins the country’s profile on its website. Political parties are banned in Saudi Arabia and human rights groups willing to function legally have to go no further than investigating things like corruption or inadequate services. Campaigning for political freedoms is outlawed. One of such groups, which failed to get its license from the government, the Saudi Civil and Political Rights Association (ACPRA), was cited by AFP as saying the kingdom was holding around 30,000 political prisoners. Saudi Prince Khaled Bin Farhan Al-Saud, who spoke to RT from Dusseldorf, Germany, confirmed reports of increased prosecution of anti-government activists and said that it’s exactly what forced him to defect from his family. He accused the monarchy of corruption and silencing all voices of dissent and explained how the Saudi mechanism for suppression functioned. “There is no independent judiciary, as both police and the prosecutor’s office are accountable to the Interior Ministry. This ministry’s officials investigate ‘crimes’ (they call them crimes), related to freedom of speech. So they fabricate evidence, don’t allow people to have attorneys”, the prince told RT Arabic. “Even if a court rules to release such a ‘criminal’, the Ministry of Interior keeps him in prison, even though there is a court order to release him. There have even been killings! Killings! And as for the external opposition, Saudi intelligence forces find these people abroad! There is no safety inside or outside the country.” The strong wave of oppression is in response to the anti-government forces having grown ever more active.

O estatístico John Williams ( shadowstats.com ) informa que se deflacionado pela metodologia oficial anterior, o crescimento do PIB tem sido negativo desde a retracção em 2007. Ao imprimir dólares para suportar os bancos, o Fed criou uma bolha do mercado de títulos, uma bolha do mercado de acções e uma bolha do dólar. Se o Fed parar de imprimir dinheiro, não só os balanços dos bancos levam uma pancada como também os mercados de títulos, de acções e imobiliários. A riqueza seria liquidada. Já ninguém mais poderia pretender que há uma recuperação económica. 

A razão real porque a economia dos EUA não pode recuperar é que foi movida para o exterior. Milhões de empregos estado-unidenses em manufactura e serviços profissionais comerciáveis, tais como engenharia de software, foram transferidos para a China, a Índia e outros países onde os salários são uma fracção daqueles nos EUA. Governos não podem imprimir dinheiro para sempre sem graves consequências. A crise económica real será atingida quando a bolha da economia já não puder ser suportada pela máquina de impressão. Deveria ser óbvio para economistas, mas aparentemente não é, que empregos tipo Walmart da "Nova economia" não pagam suficientemente para aguentar uma economia dependente do consumidor. A parte assustador da crise económica iminente ocorre quando o défice do orçamento federal se ampliar, a economia se contrair e o próprio Fed se encontrar numa situação em que não pode imprimir ainda mais dólares sem provocar uma perda de confiança no dólar e nos títulos do Tesouro dos EUA. O que faz um governo desesperado numa tal situação? Confisca o que resta de pensões privadas, acumula impostos e conduz o povo e a economia mais profundamente para o chão. Este é o caminho em que está a política económica dos EUA. Qual é a solução? 

Podia ser permitido ao capitalismo que funcionasse e os bancos falirem. É mais barato salvar depositantes do que salvar os bancos. Corporações podiam ser tributadas com base na localização geográfica em que acrescentam valor ao seu produto. Se corporações criam bens no exterior que comercializam para americanos, elas teriam uma elevada taxa fiscal. Se criassem valor internamente com trabalho americano, teriam uma taxa fiscal mais baixa. A diferença fiscal podia ser utilizada para compensar a vantagem do custo do trabalho da produção deslocalizada. Levaria tempo, mas empregos retornariam para os EUA. Cidades, estados e o governo federal vagarosamente veriam suas bases fiscais reconstruídas. Rendimentos do consumidor ascenderiam outra vez com a produtividade e a economia poderia ser reposta de pé. Quanto ao défice federal, ele poderia ser reduzido significativamente acabando com as guerras de Washington. Como vários peritos estabeleceram, estas guerras são extremamente caras, acrescentando triliões de dólares às necessidades de financiamento do governo dos EUA. Como outros peritos têm mostrado, as guerras não beneficiam ninguém excepto uma pequena clique de indústrias militares/de segurança. Obviamente, não é democrático destruir o futuro de um povo em proveito de interesses especiais.

This valuable piece of information may also give us an idea on just how much the U.S. GDP data is being falsified. To get an idea of what is taking place in the U.S. economy, I obtained total energy consumption data from the U.S. Energy Information Agency (EIA). While the energy supply provides us a good gauge of global economic growth, consumption is a better tool analyzing the United States due to the fact that we use a great deal more energy than we produce. That graph below reveals how changes in energy consumption paralleled the rise and fall in the U.S. GDP growth rate:

The former president reportedly said the National Security Agency's invasion of privacy has gone too far, as he defended that actions of Edward Snowden, the American now seeking asylum in Russia after leaking classified documents revealing the massive NSA interception of communications between citizens and among government officials worldwide. 

The English translation of Carter's remarks was published in the online news source Inquisitr.com. No American media outlets reported on the closed meeting and it was not clear where Der Spiegel got its information, Inquisitr noted. But both Inquisitr and Huffington Post, which also carried the story, noted that the quotes were consistent with previous published remarks by the former president. In June, Huffington Post noted, Carter addressed the Snowden controversy in an interview with CNN after the 29-year-old intelligence analyst had flown from Hong Kong to Moscow in his quest for asylum from the U.S. government that is seeking to prosecute him for espionage and theft of government property. "He's obviously violated the laws of America, for which he's responsible," Carter said at that time, "but I think the invasion of human rights and American privacy has gone too far." The Georgia Democrat also said nations that were offering asylum to Snowden were acting within their rights. "I think that the secrecy that has been surrounding this invasion of privacy has been excessive, so I think that the bringing of it to the public notice has probably been, in the long term, beneficial," Carter said.

A former US Marine says any foreign military intervention in Syria would instigate a third World War by inevitably getting Russia involved in the conflict, Press TV reports. Ken O’Keefe, a former US Marine, told Press TV on Saturday that Russia would not remain indifferent to a potential military attack against Syria. “Russia has made [it] very, very clear that they would not sit by and allow yet another country to be bombarded and effectively raped and pillaged in terms with the empires’ designs. It will not allow this to happen,” O’Keefe said. He said a third world war was possible with “even thinking [about] … military intervention, whatever it is, whether it is using some high-tech weapons, secretly weapons and whatnot; the bottom line is that we are attempting the third world war,” he added. On June 4, Russian President Vladimir Putin warned against any attempt at foreign military intervention in Syria, stressing that such a move is doomed to fail. In April, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov warned the West against attempting to topple the government of President Bashar al-Assad. “There are governments and outside players that believe that all means are appropriate [to be used] to overthrow the Syrian regime,” Lavrov said. O’Keefe added, “At the end of the day, these people who are in power, the banksters in particular are the ones pulling the strings for the Third World War,” the former Marine said. The turmoil in Syria erupted in March 2011, and many people, including large numbers of Syrian soldiers and security personnel, have been killed so far. In May, Assad said militants from as many as 29 different countries were operating in different parts of the country.

A U.S. drone strike killed at least 17 people in Pakistan's tribal region on Wednesday, Reuters reports. Taliban commanders and security officials told Reuters that the strike mostly killed fighters for the Haqqani network. But Reuters also reports this (emphasis ours): Many were wounded in the attack, local tribesman Kaleemullah Dawar said, butrescuers delayed for fear of falling victim to a second attack, a common tactic with drone strikes. That tactic is known as the "double tap," which bombs multiple targets in relatively quick succession — meaning that the second strike often hits first responders. 

in 2007 the FBI said the tactic as commonly used by terrorist organizations such as Hamas. Last year a study by the NYU School of Law and Stanford Law Schooldetailed the U.S. use of the double tap, providing first-hand accounts of its devastating effect on rescuers and humanitarian workers. Last June the UN special rapporteur on extrajudicial killings Christof Heyns said he considers secondary strikes to be "war crimes." The NYU/Stanford report stated: "As international law experts have noted, intentional strikes on first responders may constitute war crimes." The fact that it is now normalized as a common tactic of the U.S. drone war is stunning. Furthermore, Spencer Ackerman of The Guardian reports that a recent study conducted by a U.S. military adviser found that over the course of a year that U.S. drone strikes in Afghanistan caused 10 times more civilian casualties than strikes by manned fighter aircraft. That finding contradicts the common drone defense that the robotic planes are more precise than manned planes. According to the study, drone strikes in Afghanistan were "an order of magnitude more likely to result in civilian casualties per engagement" than manned bombing runs.

France lost the last of its major AAA ratings on Friday in a blow to President Francois Hollande as his government battles to rein in public finances and kickstart the stalled economy. Fitch cut France’s credit rating by one notch to AA-plus, citing a deteriorating debt outlook and an uncertain economic environment as the euro zone crisis risked flaring up anew. 

The euro zone’s second-largest economy, which fell into a shallow recession in the first quarter of the year, had already lost its prized AAA ratings with S&P and Moody’s last year. In explaining its cut, Fitch cited a slew of causes for concern including a weaker economic output, a jump in the French unemployment rate, budget deficits and subdued external demand. Risks to fiscal projections “lie mainly to the downside,” the rating agency said in a statement, keeping a stable outlook on its new rating. “A debt ratio that is higher for longer reduces the fiscal space to absorb further adverse shocks,” it said. 

Fitch raised its estimate for how long it will take France to shave down its debt, forecasting it would peak at 96 percent of gross domestic product next year and still be as high as 92 percent in 2017. The government projects its efforts to whittle down public spending will have cut its debt to just over 88 percent by then. Standard & Poor’s rates France at AA-plus with a negative outlook. Moody’s rates it Aa1 with a negative outlook, meaning both agencies see another rating cut likely.

(CNSNews.com) – The number of Americans receiving subsidized food assistance from the federal government has risen to 101 million, representing roughly a third of the U.S. population. The U.S. Department of Agriculture estimates that a total of 101,000,000 people currently participate in at least one of the 15 food programs offered by the agency, at a cost of $114 billion in fiscal year 2012. That means the number of Americans receiving food assistance has surpassed the number of private sector workers in the U.S. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), there were 97,180,000 full-time private sector workers in 2012.

The population of the U.S. is 316.2 million people, meaning nearly a third of Americans receive food aid from the government. Of the 101 million receiving food benefits, a record 47 million Americans participated in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), commonly known as food stamps. The USDA describes SNAP as the “largest program in the domestic hunger safety net.” The USDA says the number of Americans on food stamps is a “historically high figure that has risen with the economic downturn.” SNAP has a monthly average of 46.7 million participants, or 22.5 million households. Food stamps alone had a budget of $88.6 billion in FY 2012. The USDA also offers nutrition assistance for pregnant women, school children and seniors.

US President Barack Obama quietly signed his name to an Executive Order on Friday, allowing the White House to control all private communications in the country in the name of national security. President Obama released his latest Executive Order on Friday, July 6, a 2,205-word statement offered as the “Assignment of National Security and Emergency Preparedness Communications Functions.” And although the president chose not to commemorate the signing with much fanfare, the powers he provides to himself and the federal government under the latest order are among the most far-reaching yet of any of his executive decisions. 

“The Federal Government must have the ability to communicate at all times and under all circumstances to carry out its most critical and time sensitive missions,” the president begins the order. “Survivable, resilient, enduring and effective communications, both domestic and international, are essential to enable the executive branch to communicate within itself and with: the legislative and judicial branches; State, local, territorial and tribal governments; private sector entities; and the public, allies and other nations.” President Obama adds that it is necessary for the government to be able to reach anyone in the country during situations it considers critical, writing, “Such communications must be possible under all circumstances to ensure national security, effectively manage emergencies and improve national resilience.”Later the president explains that such could be done by establishing a “joint industry-Government center that is capable of assisting in the initiation, coordination, restoration and reconstitution of NS/EP [national security and emergency preparedness] communications services or facilities under all conditions of emerging threats, crisis or emergency.”

The president of the European Parliament, Martin Schulz, and the EU Commissioner for Justice, Viviane Reding, demand Washington’s answer to Snowden’s revelations that Washington has betrayed its own allies. The question that must be asked is: do any of these protests from politicians who are almost certain to be on Washington’s payroll mean anything, or are they just make-believe protests to quiet the domestic European populations who have been betrayed by their elected leaders? 

Why would the French president and the German justice minister think any reassurance from Washington meant anything? When in human memory has Washington told the truth about anything? When has Washington’s reassurance meant anything? The Tonkin Gulf? Iraqi weapons of mass destruction? Iranian nukes? Assad’s sarin gas attack? FBI orchestrated “terror attacks”? It is a proven fact that the US government lies every time it opens its mouth. Compared to Washington, Stalin, Hitler, Tojo, Mao, Castro, Chavez, and Pol Pot were truthful. Washington’s reply to Europe’s demands for explanation is: “We will discuss these issues bilaterally with EU member states,” but “we are not going to comment publicly on specific alleged intelligence activities.” You know what that means. Bilateral means that Washington is going to talk with each EU country separately, using the information the NSA has obtained to blackmail each complainant into silence. Whereas the EU together could stand up to Washington, separately the countries can be browbeat and offered more money or threats that illicit love affairs will be revealed to shut them up. 

Washington is betting on its power to intimidate individual countries with the threat of isolation and being cut off from money. If the EU countries agree to the secret bilateral explanations from Washington, the affair will end and the spying on Europe will continue while the EU politicians deny that the spying continues. By now the entire world must know that Washington is not merely lawless, but also totally out of control, reveling in arrogance and hubris, driven by desires for hegemony over the entire world. Washington is so paranoid and distrustful that it doesn’t even trust its own citizens or the European puppet governments that it has bought and paid for. Washington is the only government that has ever used nuclear weapons, and Washington used them against a defeated government that was trying to surrender.

If you, an American, living in superpower America lack the courage to stand up to the evil that is “your” government, perhaps the courage of Edward Snowden, Bradley Manning, Julian Assange, and tiny Ecuador will give you heart. The US government only rewards bad behavior. The US government consistently rewards those who conspire against the elected governments of their own countries, setting them up as dictators when Washington overthrows the elected governments. 

Washington, exposed with its hand in the cookie jar devouring the privacy of the entire world and prevented by its hubris from acknowledging its illegal behavior and apologizing, has so mishandled the Snowden affair that Washington has done far more damage to itself than occurred from Snowden’s revelations. Washington has proven conclusively that it has no respect for anyone’s human rights, that it has no respect for any country’s sovereignty, that it has no respect for any moral principles, especially those it most often mouths, and that it relies on coercion and violence alone. The rest of the world now knows who its enemy is. Washington’s presstitutes, by helping Washington demonize Snowden, Glenn Greenwald, Manning, Assange, and Ecuador, have demonstrated to the world that the US media is devoid of integrity and that nothing it reports can be believed. The US print and TV media and NPR comprise a ministry of propaganda for Washington’s immoral agendas. American patriots, who feel that they should be on “their” government’s side regardless of the facts, would do well to remember what true patriotism is. For Americans, patriotism has always meant allegiance to the Constitution, not to the government. The oath is to defend the Constitution against enemies domestic and foreign. 

The Bush and Obama regimes have proven themselves to be the Constitution’s worst enemies. It is not possible for a true patriot to support a government that destroys the Constitution. The United States is the Constitution. Our country is not the Obama regime, the Bush regime, or some other administration. Our country is the Constitution. The Constitution is our country. Beyond obligations to one’s own country, all humans have a responsibility to human life itself. But the governments of NATO countries and other accommodating states are not only selling out their own peoples by supporting Washington’s wars of aggression, they are selling out humanity. Washington’s hubris and arrogance grow as Washington bumps off country after country. Sooner or later Russia and China, will realize that they themselves are targets and will draw firmer lines. Arrogance will prevent Washington from acknowledging the lines, and the final war will be launched. Washington’s hegemonic impulse is driving the world to destruction. The peoples of the world should realize this and force their governments to stop enabling Washington’s aggression.
