The Eurozone has been spiralling deeper into its pit of misfortunes, slipping into deflation in December 2014. This accelerated the strength of sentiments that the European Central Bank (ECB) will implement a robust quantitative easing (QE) programme, to help bolster the region’s economic growth. Such a move would pose a significant expense to the SNB, who would have to spend more in buying up euros to maintain the peg. As the SNB had been maintaining its euro peg successfully for more than three years, the central bank’s announcement on Thursday that it had abolished the peg stunned investors yet again, and caused market turmoil. 

The Swiss National Bank’s dismantling of its ceiling on the value of the Swiss franc yesterday stunned the financial world. Jim Armitage and Russell Lynch of the Independent called the ensuing jump up in the value of the Swiss franc an earthquake; Social media called it “Francogeddon;” while the CEO of Swatch, Nick Hayek, called it “a tsunami for the export industry and for tourism, and finally for the entire country.” Thomas Jordan, the head of the Swiss National Bank,explained, “If you decide to exit such a policy, you have to take the markets by surprise.”  At points during the day yesterday, the Swiss franc was as much as 39% more expensive relative to the euro and the US dollar than it had been the day before. Exchange rate movements have yet to settle down, but seem to be headed for something closer to a 15%-25% increase in the value of the Swiss franc. In my Dec. 19, 2014 column “The Swiss are now at a negative interest rate due to the Russian ruble collapse” I made three predictions. On one, I was spectacularly wrong. On the second, I was exactly on target. As for the third, its time has not yet come, but will.

Russia has shut off gas supplies through Ukraine to six EU states, ostensibly due to Ukraine’s alleged illegal siphoning gas from the pipeline. The European Union warned that the sudden cut-off to some of its member countries was ‘completely unacceptable’. The move comes just as winter begins to bite across Europe. The pipeline crossing Ukraine supplies over 60% of the entire EU’s natural gas. Six countries – Greece, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Croatia, Romania and Turkey – report a complete halt of gas coming in from Russia. Yesterday, Ukraine confirmed that Russia had completely cut off their supply. Croatia said it was temporarily reducing supplies to industrial customers while Bulgaria said it had enough gas only ‘for a few days’ and was already in a ‘crisis situation’.

There is the risk of an energy crisis and it is worrying that the move comes about at a time of increased maneuverings and posturing by NATO and the Russian army and deepening conflict in Ukraine. Ukraine lurched back toward full-scale conflict today as troops loyal to the new Ukraine government battled with pro-Russian forces for control of an eastern airport. Ukraine said yesterday that cease fire violations have surged to a new record, while the nation’s security council warned the unrest may spark a “continental war” and German Chancellor Angela Merkel called for emergency talks.

The firm, which downgraded U.S. government debt in October 2013 to A-, today said it has decided to maintain Russia’s rating at A with a stable outlook. “The debt repayment environment has somewhat deteriorated but is expected to stabilize in the medium term,” Dagong said in an emailed statement regarding its assessment. 

“As the economy stabilizes and the monetary policy normalizes, the domestic credit environment will gradually recover.” Russia’s economy is forecast to contract 1.8 percent this year versus 3 percent growth in the U.S., which would be the fastest pace in 10 years, according to economists’ projections. Dagong’s optimism contrasts with the biggest ratings companies: Standard & Poor’s said last month it will probably lower Russia to non-investment grade within 90 days, while Fitch Ratings will announce the results of a review tomorrow. Privately-held Dagong, established in 1994, isn’t formally tied to the Chinese government. It started sovereign ratings in 2010 in a bid to break the monopoly of U.S. rating firms, according to the company’s website, mirroring the government’s strategy of gaining greater influence on the global stage.

So – even given $120bn in external debt owed by Russian banks and companies maturing next year – what’s the problem?” The article later makes the valid point that not all of these $180 billion in net external assets can be immediately repatriated to meet debt obligations. 

However to this sum must be added the $400 billion held in reserve by the Russian Central and the operational reserves held by the government and by Russian corporates within Russia. Moreover, as we have repeatedly pointed out, the devaluation of the rouble protects Russia’s budget and trade balance and keeps the latter in surplus, ensuring a secure cash flow. In summary, Russia, both the state and its private businesses, are overall solvent whatever temporary difficulties of liquidity they may run into because of the rouble’s fall. We would add that one of the persistent errors made in scaremongering articles like this one by Ambrose Evans-Pritchard in the Daily Telegraph is that they write as if the only foreign exchange in Russia available to pay off debts is the $400 billion of reserves held by the Central Bank.

The coup in Kiev was in fact initiated by the US and Germany. Its aim was to integrate Ukraine into the EU and NATO. US Assistant Secretary of State Victoria Nuland admitted that since 1991 the US had invested $5 billion to build up pro-Western forces in the country. At the end of 2013, only a few thousand people demonstrated against the government in Kiev. There was no indication of broad support for the EU and its representatives. Opinion polls over the previous 10 years indicated that only 30 to 40 percent of the Ukrainian population supported Ukraine joining the EU, with equally as many in favour of closer economic ties with Russia. The spokesmen of the protests were familiar figures, such as the current Prime Minister Yatsenyuk, Vitali Klitschko and Oleg Tyagnibok. Government personnel and parliamentary representatives from NATO countries took part openly in the demonstrations, which blocked government buildings and urged the bringing down of the pro-Russian elected president, Yanukovych.

Let’s charitably, for the moment, call it a Western-centric view. But one thing is unmistakable: the Western mainstream news media have a reprehensible double standard when it comes to their coverage of terrorist attacks against Russia compared with incidents in Western countries.

Now contrast this media frenzy with the downbeat Western reaction to an actual terrorist attack less than two weeks ago in the Russian republic of Chechnya. On December 4, 19 people were killed in the city of Grozny when a heavily armed team of Islamist extremists went on the rampage and set a multi-storey media centre ablaze. Ten police officers were killed during a ferocious six-hour gun battle that ended when nine of the attackers were eventually neutralised. There is hard evidence that the assailants were part of the Islamist network belonging to the self-declared South Caucasus emirate of Doku Umarov. This network is officially affiliated with ISIS and other Al Qaeda-type terror groups. Many of the militants from the Russian Caucasus region are known to have travelled to wage jihad in Iraq and Syria. In other words, Russia actually did incur a serious, organised terror attack on December 4 carried out by a group that is ideologically and logistically integrated with the Al Qaeda-linked ISIS organisation, which the Western governments have mounted an international military coalition to carry out air strikes against. That US-led coalition includes Australia, which in recent months has sent fighter jets and up to 600 troops to join in air strikes against ISIS militants in Iraq and presumably Syria as well. Yet, in stark contrast to this week’s coffee shop incident in Sydney, the Western media and governments gave relatively scant coverage to the altogether more disturbing attack in Grozny. The former incident was given global importance, whereas the Russian terror assault, with its much more fatal and significant implications, was afforded comparatively minimal Western attention. The anomalous Western media focus cannot be explained away simply as a random editorial oversight. Over the past year alone Russia has witnessed a spate of truly alarming terrorist attacks that have resulted in at least 60 violent deaths, including the Grozy firefight earlier this month.

“Stretched positioning means even a mild disappointment to dollar bulls could prompt a sell-off in the currency.” That “consensus” that the dollar will strengthen is based on the end of the Fed’s QE, shrinking trade deficits due to rising oil production in the US and dropping oil imports. The consensus also relies on more demand for dollars as the Fed is threatening to raise interest rates in 2015, at a time when the Bank of Japan is madly printing money and pushing yields to new lows; and when the ECB is promising outright purchases of sovereign bonds on a massive scale. And true, BlackRock says, that increasing rate differential is going to create demand for dollar assets. But that “bullish dollar view is reflected in futures markets positioning. Trades against the euro look especially crowded, with short positioning almost three standard deviations from the mean.” Then there’s the “malign path” to a higher dollar: a global economic slowdown that would trigger “safe-haven buying.”

So the stronger dollar might remain elusive in 2015. There are reasons beyond the fact that the trade is too crowded. BlackRock cites the “Pavlovian tendencies” of the markets that have been “conditioned to wait for monetary policy to dictate market moves.” They might hold their fire until the Fed gives the go-ahead. In this case, “the US dollar will only take off when Fed Chair Janet Yellen fires off her first rate hike.” That might not happen. Instead, the Fed might refuse to raise rates because of “growth disappointment (it has happened before).” And then, there is “an even worse scenario for dollar bulls: US economic momentum stalls, leading to expectations for a fourth round of QE.” That might cause the dollar to return to its norm and sag once again. As the above chart shows, it’s unrewarding to be a dollar bull long-term. The dollar has been slated for destruction, but the Fed wants to accomplish this over many years, rather than all at once. And only occasionally do things get out of hand, and the dollar rallies for a few years – enough to infuse a lot of false confidence.

MOSCOW, December 31 (TASS) - Russia plans to conduct around thirty launches of space carrier rockets from different spaceports in 2015, a source in the spacerocket industry told TASS. According to preliminary plans for 2015, Russia will conduct 12 Proton-M launches, 4 Soyuz-FG launches, 3 Soyuz-2.1a launches. 

Two launches are planned for each of the following: the Dnepr lrocket, Soyuz-U, Soyuz-2.1b and the Rokot rocket. One launch is planned for the Soyuz-2.1v and the Zenit rocket. The launches will be conducted from three spaceports: the Baikonur cosmodrome (23 launches) in Kazakhstan and Russia's Plesetsk (4 launches) and Dombarovsky (2 launches) spaceports. 

A total of 49 space vehicles are to be orbited by those carrier rockets, the source noted.

Russia is launching a new national defense facility, which is meant to monitor threats to national security in peacetime, but would take control of the entire country in case of war. The new top-security, fortified facility in Moscow includes several large war rooms, a brand new supercomputer in the heart of a state-of-the-art data processing center, underground facilities, secret transport routes for emergency evacuation and a helicopter pad, which was deployed for the first time on Nov. 24 on the Moscow River. 

The Defense Ministry won’t disclose the price tag for the site, but it is estimated at the equivalent of several billion dollars. The new National Defense Control Center (NDCC) is a major upgrade on what was previously called the Central Command of the General Staff, a unit tasked with round-the-clock monitoring of military threats against Russia, particularly ballistic missile launches, and deployment of strategic nuclear weapons. It was roughly a counterpart to the US National Military Command Center, the Pentagon’s principal command and control site. The NDCC inherits all those functions, but also has plenty of extra roles as well. 

In peacetime, an additional task is to monitor all of Russia’s important military assets, from hardware being produced by defense contractors to the state of oil refineries, to weather conditions and their effect on transportation routes. And if Russia does get into a war, the center would act as a major communication hub and a form of wartime government, delivering reports to the country’s military command and giving orders to all ministries, state-owned companies and other organizations, according to the needs of the armed forces. “The creation of NDCC was one of the biggest military projects of the past few years. The closest analogy in the past in terms of functions and tasks was the Commander-in-Chief HQ in 1941-45, which centralized all controls of both the military machine and the economy of the nation in the interests of the war,” Lt. General Mikhail Mizintsev, the NDCC chief, told Lenta.ru in an interview.

O objectivo nada secreto desta política é a "contenção" da China, ou seja, Washington quer preservar a sua posição de única superpotência mundial, controlando o crescimento explosivo da China. A fim de atingir os seus objectivos na Ásia, os EUA precisam de empurrar a NATO mais para Leste, apertar o seu cerco à Rússia e controlar o fluxo do petróleo e do gás de Leste para Oeste. Estas são as pré-condições necessárias para instituir o domínio hegemónico no continente. E é por isso que a administração Obama está tão interessada em apoiar o governo torpe da junta de Kiev; é porque Washington precisa das tropas de choque neonazis de Poroshenko para arrastar a Rússia a um conflito na Ucrânia que esgote os seus recursos, desacredite Putin aos olhos dos seus parceiros comerciais da UE e crie o pretexto para posicionar a NATO na fronteira ocidental da Rússia. A ideia de que o exército pró-Obama na Ucrânia está a defender a soberania do país é uma charlatanice pura. O que se passa nos bastidores é que os EUA estão a tentar combater um declínio económico irreversível e uma parte sempre contracção do PIB global, em permanente redução, através da força militar. Assistimos hoje na Ucrânia a uma versão do século XXI do Grande Jogo, implementado por fantasistas políticos e com dificuldades financeiras, que acham que podem atrasar o relógio para o tempo do apogeu pós II Guerra Mundial do Império americano, quando o mundo era a pérola da América. 

Graças a Deus, esse período acabou. Mas o gás também vai ser denominado em dólares que aumentarão brutalmente a procura do dólar americano, perpetuando assim o sistema de reciclagem do petrodólar, o que cria um grande mercado para a dívida dos EUA e que ajuda a manter as acções e títulos dos EUA na secção da hemorragia (apenas) nasal. É disto que se trata, de preservar a supremacia do dólar forçando as nações a manterem quantidades excessivas de dólares americanos para usar nas transacções de energia e para servir suas dívidas denominadas em dólares. Enquanto Washington puder controlar os abastecimentos mundiais de energia e forçar o mundo a comerciar em dólares, pode gastar muito mais do que produz e não ser responsabilizado por isso. É como ter um cartão de crédito que nunca seja preciso reembolsar. Isto é uma trapaça que o Tio Sam está preparado para defender com tudo o que tiver, incluindo bombas nucleares.

But with President Barack Obama's recent move authorizing U.S. forces in Afghanistan to carry out military operations against Taliban and al-Qaida targets, America's longest war will in fact continue for at least another two years. Obama's decision to give American forces a more active role than previously envisioned suggests the U.S. is still concerned about the Afghan government's ability to fight. And agreements signed by Afghan President Ashraf Ghani to allow U.S. and NATO troops to remain in the country are seen as a red line by the Taliban, further narrowing any hope of peace talks.

To put that number in perspective, there were over 100,000 U.S. troops here in 2011 (along with 40,000 troops from other nations) during the peak of the American-led surge. They occupied more than 700 bases across Afghanistan, some of them the size of small cities. Through 2011, those troops were committed primarily to a unilateral fight against the Taliban. 

Many U.S. officials hoped that with so much combat power, Western forces could deal a knockout blow to the Taliban. By 2012, it was clear that such a blow had not been dealt. Insurgents were able to use sanctuaries in Pakistan to regroup and regenerate. Reconciliation efforts failed and the war appeared to have no short-term diplomatic or military solution. The White House needed a new "New Strategy."

By signing this treaty, we, in fact, made all of Europe unreachable for our medium-range missiles. Now, Russia can strike nuclear blows on Europe only with the help of air forces. Yet, there are powerful air defense systems in Europe that are difficult to overcome. "We went for it, because the Americans developed Pershing-II missiles. A distinctive feature of this missile is a flat trajectory of flight and a very high precision contact - about five-ten meters. Such a ballistic missile overcomes the distance of 2.5-3 thousand kilometers within 5-8 minutes. Thus, the Americans created conditions for a beheading strike. They obtained an opportunity to strike Moscow and other Russian cities from the territory of Turkey and many other places.

Americans take efforts to destroy Russia in mere minutes. "In order to protect our country from this decapitating strike, we took up the treaty on intermediate-range missiles. Today, the Americans scream and shout that we allegedly violate the treaty. All this, of course, is being done to find a reason to pull out from the treaty and launch the deployment of such missiles. In addition, the Americans have the so-called breakout potential. After the START-1 Treaty that Gorbachevconcluded, nuclear weapons were cut from about ten to nearly four thousand warheads for each side. Russia destroyed 6,000 warheads. Moreover, the weapons-grade uranium and plutonium obtained from the disassembly of those warheads was handed over to the United States for a symbolic amount."

Washington is hell-bent on a war with Russia. It is part of the PNAC (Plan for a New American Century) to take over the world. After Russia, China would follow. That’s the plan. China is being encircled as we speak. Never mind that Russia and China have recently concluded a pact, a close financial and military alliance – which to defeat will be next to impossible. Unless – and here is the crux of the matter – unless Washington initiates an all-out nuclear war, destroying the planet, including itself – but foremost Europe. Of NATO’s 28 member countries, 26 are in Europe, of which 12 in Eastern Europe, countries that used to be part of or ‘dependencies’ of the former Soviet Union. And this happened despite Washington’s promise at the time of the fall of the Berlin Wall, not to expand NATO eastward. A lie and sheer affront to Russia. This provocation is exacerbated today by the US’s further arming the NATO bases of Poland and Latvia, and by NATO’s considering Ukraine’s urgent call – or rather, the call of the Washington installed Kiev Nazi thugs – for NATO protection and to become a NATO member as soon as possible.

Russia is planning to double the size of its Airborne Troops (VDV) by 2019 to 72,000 personnel, it has been reported. A "high ranking" General Staff source told Russian news agency ITAR-TASS on 6 August that the Ministry of Defence has approved the proposal. Despite the increase, this would not take the armed forces over the currently authorised total of one million military personnel. ITAR-TASS reports that a third manoeuvre regiment will join existing airborne divisions and brigades, and entirely new formations will also be established. The airborne's current Spetsnaz regiment will be expanded to a brigade before the end of this year. Meanwhile, the commander of the Airborne Troops, Colonel General Vladimir Shamanov, told news agencies on 1 August that his branch intends to acquire more than 1,500 new BMD-4M airborne infantry fighting vehicles, and 2,500 BTR-MD/BTR-D3 Rakushka troop transporters by 2025. Four thousand new combat vehicles would more than fully re-equip the airborne's current manoeuvre battalions. As recently as 2009 he believed only 200 of the new tracked BMD-4Ms would be purchased. Gen Shamanov said that in 2015 the airborne will receive two "battalion sets" of 32 BMD-4Ms, along with more than 20 Rakushkas.

Airborne units are currently field-testing both new combat vehicles. The VDV chief indicated that the airborne troops have reached a long-term agreement with vehicle maker Kamaz to develop more wheeled vehicles with different turrets or "combat modules." He said that a multipurpose vehicle might come in fire-support, mine-clearance, and other variants. Airborne forces are already using various configurations of the wheeled Kamaz Tigr 4x4 military utility vehicle, according to Gen Shamanov. The airborne commander also confirmed that his branch will receive its first strike-capable unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) in 2015. As reported earlier, the reconnaissance company in each of Russia's three airborne divisions will expand to a battalion on 1 December. Gen Shamanov said that his branch is not planning a permanent presence in the Arctic, but will continue training in Russia's far north. He indicated that a training centre for the ground forces, naval infantry, and airborne in Pechenga is being considered. The airborne will also conduct joint exercises with the Northern Fleet in 2015.

The world is in turmoil. Like in the early 1940’s, something tremendous is gaining shape, something irreversible. Almost all of us who have been analyzing the Empire fighting against the propaganda and nihilism it spreads, and its venomous tentacles extending to every corner of the globe, know that ‘appeasing’ Western imperialism is clearly impossible, as it is impractical, and even immoral.

Just as George W. Bush (clearly borrowing from fundamentalist Christian rhetoric), liked to say: “You are either with us or against us”. Countries are now evidently put on the spot: ‘they either accept the Western neo-colonialist doctrine’, or they get destroyed, one after another, as were Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya and Syria. No logic can help, no negotiations, no international mediation from the United Nations. The willingness to compromise is mocked. Appeals for simple human compassion do not move the rulers of the Empire even an inch.

It is clear that the Empire is preparing for the final assault. It will not back down. It will attack, destroy and annihilate. No idea when, but it will. And it will happen sooner rather than later, and with tremendous force. Some would ask, why now? Why is there suddenly such a rush to fight the final battle for the total control over the planet? The answer is very clear: for the first time disgust with the Empire is widespread, and worldwide. 

Many people are getting cured from blindness. The mask of benevolence and rationality has been torn off by powerful media outlets based in the countries of Latin America, in Russia, China, Iran, but also in North America where the independent media is playing an increasingly important role. It is not even a matter of some elaborate ‘objectivity’, anymore. To get things right, it is enough to call fascism by its real name, as it is sufficient to identify mass murder perpetrated by the Empire on all continents!

It dwells on self-righteousness, and at the same time, on its twisted market-fundamentalist faith that everything and everybody are for sale. It is a monster full of complexes – both those of superiority and inferiority. It is not a happy monster and the people it produces are mostly miserable, lonely and scared. But it cannot change, it cannot back-up, it cannot let go. It would rather destroy its children and the world, than to admit that it went totally wrong, for years, decades and centuries. 

Now many people have had enough, and some have even forgotten how to be scared! And the monster knows it, and it is actually scared itself, of those who are not scared of it. The voices of the voiceless are now resonating louder and louder – we make sure that they are! Except in the countries where the intellectuals and ‘elites’ have totally sold out, like in Indonesia or Malaysia, the horrendous deeds of the colonialism and neo-colonialism of Europe and North America, are finally being discussed, analyzed, and understood. And the monster, the Empire, knows that it is the beginning of the end. It cannot live as an equal. Therefore, it will fight its final battle. It will try to win. Or, it will try to destroy the world. Because life is not worth living for it, if it is not in full control; if its God is not in control, if it is not perceived as the enforcer of the divine manifesto.

Hungary has decided to align itself with Russia against the United States. The Western Alliance is starting to fray, over the insistence by Barack Obama and the U.S. Congress to go to war against Russia. This is called a ‘new cold war,’ but it’s actually already a hot war within Ukraine, immediately next door to Russia. America’s plan to locate nuclear missiles there aimed against Russia has made stunning progress this year. The formerly neutral nation of Ukraine has now become officially anti-Russian. 

Because of the Obama coup, Ukraine is suffering a civil war between the Ukrainian regime that Obama’s CIA and mercenaries installed in Kiev on 22 February 2014, versus the people in Ukraine’s far eastern districts, where the Ukrainian President whom Obama was overthrowing had received around 90% of all the votes that had been cast there, and so the newly installed Obama regime in Kiev in the west was overwhelmingly rejected by them — hence, Ukraine’s civil war is raging there now, with Obama’s Kiev regime trying to eliminate the residents there. 

But, within the European Union, and especially among its former member-states of the Soviet Union, this is, as of yet, still only a cold war, which is in the process of heating up toward perhaps the super-hot temperature of a nuclear conflict between Russia and NATO (the latter organization consisting of the United States and its vassal nations against Russia). 

And America is already investing heavily in it. According to German Economic News (GEN), on December 25th, “Hungary Will Not Take Part in the Cold War Against Russia.” They report that, “Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orban takes his distance from the EU, and accuses the US government of trying to instigate a new Cold War against Russia. Hungary will not participate.” GEN also links to an earlier, October 19th, GEN article, which had reported that, “After Russia, Hungary is now apparently also being targeted by Americans: the United States is hitting senior Hungarian government officials and businessmen with entry bans. The Americans throw corruption-charges against the Hungarians.”
