China just dropped an absolute bombshell, but it was almost entirely ignored by the mainstream media in the United States. The central bank of China has decided that it is "no longer in China’s favor to accumulate foreign-exchange reserves". During the third quarter of 2013, China's foreign-exchange reserves were valued at approximately $3.66 trillion. And of course the biggest chunk of that was made up of U.S. dollars. For years, China has been accumulating dollars and working hard to keep the value of the dollar up and the value of the yuan down. One of the goals has been to make Chinese products less expensive in the international marketplace. But now China has announced that the time has come for it to stop stockpiling U.S. dollars. 

 And if that does indeed turn out to be the case, than many U.S. analysts are suggesting that China could also soon stop buying any more U.S. debt. Needless to say, all of this would be very bad for the United States. For years, China has been systematically propping up the value of the U.S. dollar and keeping the value of the yuan artificially low. This has resulted in a massive flood of super cheap products from across the Pacific that U.S. consumers have been eagerly gobbling up. Thanks to the massively unbalanced trade that we have had with China, tens of thousands of our businesses, millions of our jobs and trillions of our dollars have left this country and gone over to China. And now China has apparently decided that there is not much gutting of our economy left to do and that it is time to let the dollar collapse. As I mentioned above, China has announced that it is going to stop stockpiling foreign-exchange reserves... The People’s Bank of China said the country does not benefit any more from increases in its foreign-currency holdings, adding to signs policy makers will rein in dollar purchases that limit the yuan’s appreciation. “It’s no longer in China’s favor to accumulate foreign-exchange reserves,” Yi Gang, a deputy governor at the central bank, said in a speech organized by China Economists 50 Forum at Tsinghua University yesterday. The monetary authority will “basically” end normal intervention in the currency market and broaden the yuan’s daily trading range, Governor Zhou Xiaochuan wrote in an article in a guidebook explaining reforms outlined last week following a Communist Party meeting. Neither Yi nor Zhou gave a timeframe for any changes. It isn't going to happen overnight, but the value of the U.S. dollar is going to start to go down, and all of that cheap stuff that you are used to buying at Wal-Mart and the dollar store is going to become a lot more expensive. 

But of even more importance is what this latest move by China could mean for U.S. government debt. As most Americans have heard, we are heavily dependent on foreign nations such as China lending us money. Right now, China owns nearly 1.3 trillion dollars of our debt. Unfortunately, as CNBC is noting, if China is going to quit stockpiling our dollars than it is likely that they will stop stockpiling our debt as well... Analysts see this as the PBoC hinting that it will let its currency fluctuate, without intervention, thus negating the need for holding large reserves of the dollar. And if the dollar is no longer needed, then it could look to curb its purchases of dollar-denominated assets like U.S. Treasuries. "If they are looking to reduce these purchases going forward then, yes, you'd have to look at who the marginal buyer would be," Richard McGuire, a senior rate strategist at Rabobank told CNBC in an interview. "Together, with the Federal Reserve tapering its bond purchases, it has the potential to add to the bearish long-term outlook on U.S. Treasuries." So who is going to buy all of our debt? That is a very good question. If the Federal Reserve starts tapering bond purchases and China quits buying our debt, who is going to fill the void?

Buzzfeed reports that GOP senators publicly avowed that Israeli diplomats had lobbied them to oppose U.S. policy toward Iran. While I don’t want to make the case that lobbies or lobbyists are evil incarnate since they seem to be as American as Wall Street (or apple pie); this strikes me as, if not a reasonable facsimile of treason, then at least a foreign government intruding on U.S. sovereignty. 

Israel intensive and intrusive lobbying campaign against the Obama administration was precisely the reason why I published Shamai Leibowitz’s top secret documents, which confirmed these sorts of slimy Israeli government tactics in this country to gin up a war against Iran. The Senate Banking committee is considering some of the harshest sanctions yet against Iran. This legislation is opposed by the Obama administration since it’s on the verge of securing a nuclear agreement with Iran. One aspect that would be necessary to implement the agreement would be softening some parts of the anti-Iran sanctions regime. That’s why the Israeli government, which has all but called the agreement a ticket to World War III, wants even worse sanctions than currently exist. This would tie Obama’s hands and prevent him from implementing any agreement with Iran. That would be honky-dory for the Israelis who want no agreement and an eventual war against the Iranian regime. As part of its campaign against the new sanctions, John Kerry, Joe Biden and chief nuclear negotiator Wendy Sherman testified to the committee. The GOP senators complained that the witnesses would tell them nothing about the deal that’s being offered. First of all, you can read any decent newspaper and it will tell you the terms being discussed. That’s not news. Second, is it any surprise that Obama officials would not want to reveal to Republican senators who detest any possible agreement what its future terms might be?

That is, the economy required $3 of debt to produce $1 more in real GDP. In recent years diminishing returns to debt required $6 of debt to increase GDP by a $1. Whatever the benefits of debt, they have clearly diminished, almost to zero. Debt expansion has gone exponential in order to salvage the weak growth in GDP.

To put this into a perspective the average reader can understand, think of GDP as a household’s spending: The “family” depicted above has to borrow each year in order to maintain its spending level. Imagine the condition of your family if you borrowed 6 times the amount of incremental spending each year. Then imagine the condition of your family after 40 years of continuously increasing your debt levels substantially in excess of your income. It is impossible for a family without a printing press and a cooperative Federal Reserve to engage in such behavior.

Just because the media tells you that something is true does not mean that it actually is. If unemployment was actually going down, the percentage of the working age population that has a job should actually be going up. As you are about to see, that is simply not the case. The following are 10 facts about the growing unemployment crisis in America that will blow your mind... #1 The percentage of working age Americans with a job fell to 58.3 percent in October. The lowest that number has been at any point since the year 2000 is 58.2 percent. In other words, there has been absolutely no "jobs recovery". So this is kind of a global assault where we're not at this point any more protected here than we are anywhere else. And what this really, I think, points to is the fact that the security and surveillance state is global and it serves, essentially, global power, which is corporate.

Paris (AFP) - France, and the eurozone's fragile recovery, were thrown on the back foot on Friday when rating agency Standard and Poor's downgraded French debt by one notch, but the government reacted with defiance. Standard and Poor's said in strong terms that high debt, taxes and unemployment were squeezing the government's room for manoeuvre and that deeper structural reforms were urgently needed. But S and P held steady its ratings of leading French banks. The announcement pushed up France's 10-year borrowing rate and depressed French stocks. The critically important 10-year bond yield rose to 2.391 percent from 2.158 percent late on Thursday. The downgrade to "AA" from "AA+" came three days after the European Commission warned that France was in danger of overshooting its promises to cut its public deficit. 

The downgrade reflects our view that the French government's current approach to budgetary and structural reforms to taxation, as well as to product, services and labour markets, is unlikely to substantially raise France's medium-term growth prospects," S and P said. "Moreover, we see France's fiscal flexibility as constrained by successive governments' moves to increase already-high tax levels, and what we see as the government's inability to significantly reduce total government spending," it said.French president Francois Hollande responded with defiance, saying that he would stick to his "strategy" and hold his course on economic policy. Finance Minister Pierre Moscovici deplored "the critical and inexact judgements" made by the agency. And Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault said that the decision "does not take into account all the reforms" made by the government. S and P was sceptical that these reforms were enough, but it said that the outlook was stable, noting that the French economy had several underlying strengths. The stable outlook means there is a less than a one-in-three chance that the agency would change France's rating over the next two years.

The Senate Intelligence Committee approved a bill called the FISA Improvement Act on Thursday. Committee chair Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) called the reforms “prudent, responsible and meaningful,” but critics say the bill actually gives the National Security Agency more legal protections to continue its bulk data collection. Previously, the NSA used its own interpretation of Section 215 of the Patriot Act to spy on American citizens, and the FISA Improvement Act would codify that program into law. There is a separate, competing bill introduced earlier this week that would end the NSA’s ability to conduct bulk collection of phone records. BLACK: So I'm dealing with the effort--primarily by Republicans, but with strong support from Democrats--to gut the Dodd-Frank act. So this has multiple parts, but the one I'm going to concentrate on is the passage of or attempted passage of legislation that would remove the protections that Dodd-Frank tried to put in place. And remember, Dodd-Frank didn't put a whole lot of effective protections in place. So two big things that Dodd-Frank didn't do are coming back to bite it. Dodd-Frank didn't simply repeal the repeal of Glass-Steagall and reintroduce that law that had separated commerce and banking, and in Dodd-Frank they didn't simply repeal the Commodity Futures Modernization Act of 2000, which had created the massive regulatory black hole on financial derivatives. But there were specific provisions that had elements of Glass-Steagall and elements of giving regulatory authority over financial derivatives that were put into the Dodd-Frank bill. And the big banks, working to some extent with the big corporations, are making an enormous effort to get rid of these protective portions of the law.

So the one I'm going to focus on is the one that was driven by Citibank that would allow a wide range of financial derivatives to be done directly by the bank, which is to say, the insured entity, which is to say, the government would be on the hook if there were losses. And Dodd-Frank was designed to prevent or at least dramatically minimize that. So this is a truly awful bill. And we talked about it earlier. An analysis of the 80 lines of the bill when it was first introduced showed that 75 of them were written by Citicorp, including entire paragraphs in which the only thing changed was to make some words plural by Congress. And this has been adopted by the House of Representatives by a greater than two-to-one margin, with virtually all Republicans supporting it and 70 Democrats supporting it. And there's been a study that shows the people that are cosponsoring this kind of bill get $18 from the banking industry and finance industry for every $1 that goes from that industry to people who oppose the bill. So you get what you pay for type of thing. And, by the way, this is one of eight bills that the House has passed. This particular bill probably won't become law this year, because the Obama administration has said it's not in favor of it, and simply the time of the year and such.
